There’s something about a man in the kitchen. Not in a clumsy, “look at me trying” kind of way, but calm, confident, sleeves rolled, a dish towel slung over his shoulder… focused.
Intentional.
He’s not just making food. He’s creating something… for me.
There was a time when cooking was expected of women. It was part of the role, like folding laundry or being quiet in public, but that’s changed. Men are cooking now. Not just to survive, but to nourish, to impress, to care.
It’s sexy, really.
This moment where love tastes like garlic and butter, slow-roasted tenderness, and something plated just right, not because it had to be, but because he wanted it to be.
I’ve made plenty of meals in my life. I can throw it down when I want to.
Thanksgiving? Check.
Hearty Puerto Rican dishes from scratch? Check.
But I won’t lie, I’d hire a chef if I could.
Cooking doesn’t spark joy for me, not most days. With a toddler on my hip, pregnant with my second, dishes in the sink, a to-do list that doesn’t end… It’s just another task. Another thing I have to do before I can sit down and just be.
So when he offers, when he takes over the kitchen without asking, I melt a little.
It’s not just the food.
It’s the effort.
It’s the way he sees me.
Men who cook are different. They’re artists. They’re generous. They’re romantic in a quiet, deeply felt way.
Cooking says:
“I thought about you.”
“I planned this for you.”
“I wanted to make you smile.”
And I think God smiles too.
Because love shows up in action, not just words. It looks like hands preparing something warm. It sounds like laughter over simmering pots. It feels like home.
“Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.”
—1 John 3:18
So if you’re a man reading this, and you cook, please know, it matters. It speaks. And if you’ve never cooked for someone you love… maybe start. Nothing fancy. Just something real. Something with heart.
You never know what kind of prayer you’ll be answering.
With love and open hands,
Darlene
Definitely inspired me to seriously invest more time learning to cook. Especially because I love food so much. Great read! Thanks!🙏🏽
